It is becoming less common to to see women in kimono in Japan in the recent years, except at special occasions like tea ceremonies and wedding parties. Kimono is just on the brink of being designated as an endangered species! However,if you would pay a visit to a nearby shrine early in the new year, you could encounter women in such Japanese attire as kimono, both young ones and older ones. A long sleeved Kimono called "Furisode" is basically worn by a maiden lady for full dress, which makes her on the right in the picture a unwed girl. Viewed from this way of understanding, how is the little girl related to the lady? Any way, no matter how a kimono requires semi-professional ability to learn how to be dressed, its graceful appearance attracts attention.

"Kimono" means things to wear in Japanese language; thus it is a general term for underwears, outer garments, coats and gowns.

"Kimonos" has uniquely developed from clothes influenced by China since the Heian era, in the 9th century. Today's "Kimono"-form had been mostly completed in the Muromachi era, in the 15th century, and thereafter it was universally worn as "Kimonos" of popular actors like Kabuki players were well known by Ukiyoe woodblock print.
On the other hand, Zen philosophy deeply influenced the masses to wear simple, at first glance, but elaborate and expensive "Kimonos". Various kinds of ornamentation for "Kimonos" saw further development in the early 20th century because the silk fabric became one of the important exports in Japan. However, present Japanese people seldom wear "Kimono" apart from special occasions such as a wedding ceremony or a tea ceremony.
