In the northwest corner of Gunma Prefecture stands Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane volcano which has repeated large and small eruptions. The milk green crater lake in the picture measuring 300 meters in diameter and 30 meters deep doesn't allow any fish to live in because of the acidity of the water. The temperature of the lake water stands at no less than twenty degrees Celsius even in winter thanks to the geothermy. This charming view is approached by a 30 minutes' pleasant drive from Kusatsu Onsen, Japan's representative hot springs. There are not many volcanoes with a crater lake which can be seen from a short distance like this even if Japan is said to be a volcanic country. The approach way to this volcano, however, is annually closed from the end of October to the end of April.
