'Former Mikasa Hotel' in Karuizawa Town, Nagano Prefecture, is on the list of an important cultural asset in Japan as a historical structure.

This Western style hotel, designed by a Japanese architect, was originally opened in 1906. After being seriously damaged by a flood in 1910, this hotel restarted by the name of 'Mikasa Hotel' in 1925. Mikasa was named after a hill right in front of this hotel, the shape of which resembles 'Mikasa Hill' in Nara City. Nara was the capital of Japan in the 8th century, and Mikasa Hill was frequently used as a subject matter of old poems in those years. This classic hotel had been like a high-end salon as many celebrities in all fields of activity gathered here, however the hotel business came to an end in 1970. Half of the original building was carefully restored to be opened to the public thereafter.
