Japan's leading summer resort Karuizawa had been just for Westerners until the end of the 19th century. Mr. Genjiro Nozawa, a trader in Tokyo, started up a villa development project for Japanese people early in the 20th century. He purchased some seven million square meters of land, and dammed up a stream flowing here to make a pretty pond named Kumoba-ike with an esplanade. He thereafter built a hotel, golf course, market and many streets lined with trees running across this villa ground. This new villa complex highly attracted the prominent men of the time in Japan. It has passed about 100 years since, Kumoba-ike vicinity has been well matured as a high-end villa area in Karuizawa, as well as a popular sightseeing spot mainly for autumn leaves.
