This clock tower was originally built in the ground of Sapporo Agriculture School, present Hokkaido University, in 1878, as a martial arts training hall of that school. It was, at first, a bell tower though, the bell was replaced with the clock in 1881. This clock had long been abandoned by the locals, however it was carefully repaired by a nearby watchmaker in 1933. He had visited almost every day after that to take care of this old clock till 1982 as his volunteer work. Once being used as a city library before the Second World War, it is now utilized as a small museum focusing on the history of Hokkaido University as well as a rental hall for the locals. This old building is on the list of important cultural assets, because this is one of the oldest buildings in Hokkaido. The development of Hokkaido just started in the middle of the 19th century.
