The old downtown of Okinawa, where a fierce land battle was fought at the end of the Second World War, had been under the administration of the US forces. The locals who lived in some areas, where is necessary for the US forces, were compelled to move to the neighborhood of Kokusaidori street. The vicinity of this street was deserted and quiet in those years, and thereafter the black market spread on the street. Kokusaidori literally meaning 'International Street' was named after 'Ernie Pyle International Movie Theatre', which was built on this street in 1948. Present Kokusaidori is flanked with many souvenir shops, restaurants and hotels for the sightseers inside and outside Japan, as shown in the first picture. On the other hand, the shopping streets for the locals are found on the side streets of this busiest street. As shown in the second picture, they are such as 'Heiwadori' street and 'Makishi' public market.
