'Judo', invented by Dr.Kano Jigoro, was born at 'Kodo-kan' built in the precincts of 'Eisho-ji' temple late in the 19th century.

Dr.Kano Jigoro, who was constitutionally weak, was eagerly involved in Japan's native martial art 'Jujutsu', hoping to be stronger. Through this effort, he created a new combat sport 'Judo', exerting his own originality and ingenuity on old 'Jujutsu'. The picture shows the original place of 'Kodo-kan', where he started the first 'Judo' training. After that, 'Kodo-kan' moved to the present location , Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, however there stands a memorial stone indicating the original place in the grounds of 'Eisho-ji' temple near Ueno and Asakusa. Today's 'Judo', very well known throughout the world and has been included as an event at the Olympics, first saw the light of day at the tiny place in the picture.
