The vicinity of Jinbo-cho, Chiyoda-ku, is dotted with many major publishing companies such as 'Iwanami' and 'Shogakkan', big bookstores such as 'Sanseido', universities such as 'Meiji', Nihon' and Senshu', and small secondhand bookshops.
This area forms a booktown, which is originated in the 1880's when many book stores opened to sell law books to the students for the schools as stated above. In accordance with the diversification of these schools for university, the variety of books gradually expanded up to Literature, drama, natural science etc. As per the secondhand bookshops, each shop has its own area of expertise. As this area survived the Second World War, many old buildings remain, which give a
unique town scape as shown in the picture. This area is Japan's largest secondhand bookshop shopping spots with some 140 shops.
